Detailed Work Experience

Peri-Operative / PACU Nurse

2022-Present

I currently work as a nurse at the Alaska Heart & Vascular Institute. Specifically, I work in the Cardiac Cath Lab preparing patients for several different types of procedures and also making sure they safely awake without complications afterwards. The three main types of procedures that we do are: cardiac ablations, pacemaker/ICD implants, and cardiac catheterization with placement of stents. This role features a small team size which means that every member of the team plays multiple roles. For example, I am responsible for various tasks before, during, and after the procedure and I also have a host of other duties outside of procedures. These extra duties include contacting patients before and after procedures, building patient charts, computer data entry, stockroom resupply, and policy editing. Being part of a small team and taking on several different roles in this manner encourages flexibility and responsibility that extends beyond the typical nurse role.

ICU Nurse

2020-2022

I worked for two years as an ICU nurse in a hospital in southern Oregon. This job was very technically challenging and carried a high level of responsibility. An ICU (Intensive Care Unit) is the place in a hospital where the sickest of patients go. It is common to take care of only one or two patients at a given time in an ICU because they are so sick and require a lot of attention. Common tasks included taking care of individuals on life support with a ventilator, taking care of patients with severe life-threatening infections, and monitoring combative or agressive indivuals who may be withdrawing from addictive substances. My time in the ICU coincided with the worst part of the COVID pandemic and I spent many long nights attempting to save the lives of individuals with COVID. This role required an extensive knowledge of various medications and equipment as well as high emotional and spiritual maturity with regards to supporting others with the loss of loved ones.
